The annual contribution for membership is $40. You don’t have to live in Australasia to join, but you do need to be a citizen or permanent resident of an Australasian country.

The Australian Horror Writers Association (AHWA) is a non-profit organisation that formed as a way of providing a unified voice and a sense of community for Australasian writers of horror/dark fiction, while furthering the development and evolution of this genre within the region. AHWA aims to become the focal point and first point of reference for Australasian writers and fans of the dark side of literature, and to improve the acceptance and understanding of what horror is to a wider audience.
So if this sounds like something you want to be involved with, then membership is for you. You don’t need to live in Australia (or NZ) to apply, but you do need to be an Australasian citizen or permanent resident.
Why Join?
Membership! First of all, you actually get to declaim loudly and most proudly that you are an official member of the AHWA.
Newsletter – released monthly, AHWA’s newsletter is full of AHWA news, interviews, new releases, events, and more. Members can access back issues from the dedicated Newsletter page.
Website Access – Some content on the AHWA website is only accessible by members of the AHWA. This currently includes the Markets page (our extensive list of horror markets), Submission Call, and the Newsletter page, with much more to come.
Local Catch-ups – The AHWA has regional groups covering different Australian States, allowing members to catch up with other local horror writers. We’re actively working to increase these regional groups right across Australasia.
Midnight Echo, the official magazine of the AHWA for free! Midnight Echo will be published once a year and all AHWA Members receive a free PDF of each issue.
Mentor Program – this will run annually and will provide opportunities to work one-on-one with some of the best writers across Australia in order to improve your writing and storytelling.
AHWA Competition Entry – Paid up members of the AHWA will be able to enter the annual Robert N Stephenson Competition free of charge. This competition will still be open to non-members but they will need to pay the full entry fee.
Free Giveaways – We will also be running other smaller, fun competitions with special giveaways from time to time (ie, movie passes, books, dvds), which will be exclusive to AHWA members.
Special Events – AHWA members will be exclusively invited to participate in specially organised events.
Promotional Opportunities – Members of the AHWA can promote their work for free on Sinister Reads, plus the AHWA has a Dealer’s Table at selected conventions across Australia, where members can sell their books.
